From War to Recognition: A Refugee Girl Named Australia’s Community Pharmacist of the Year

Welcome to my first blog post. This will be a space where I share stories of pharmacy, leadership, resilience, and the power of community. It feels only right to begin here, with gratitude for the recognition I’ve recently received, and reflection on the journey that brought me here.

In 2025, I was honoured with two awards that mean the world to me:

• VIC Pharmacist of the Year, awarded by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA).

• Outstanding Community Pharmacist of the Year, awarded nationally by Australian Patients and presented by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia.

Both acknowledgements are deeply humbling, because they reflect not just personal effort, but a vision of pharmacy rooted in service, integrity, and care.

I came to Australia as a refugee at 13 years old. My family fled Iraq during the war, crossing mountains with little more than hope for safety. That experience of vulnerability and survival shaped me. From those broken beginnings, I built a life in a new country, one where I could give back, serve, and create something meaningful.

From crossing borders as a frightened child to crossing the stage as a national award recipient, my journey has been anything but ordinary. It is proof that with faith, heart, and grit, we can transform pain into purpose.

Pharmacy, for me, has always been about more than medicine. It is about being the heart of a community, a place where patients feel heard, families find care, and health becomes accessible. It is about innovation and leadership, ensuring that pharmacies are not just dispensaries, but true centres of wellbeing.

This recognition is not mine alone. It belongs to every patient who trusted me with their care, every colleague who shared in the mission, and every community that embraced the vision of pharmacy as something larger than four walls.

Looking forward, my hope is that we continue to be:

• The heart of our communities.

• The voice for our patients.

• The leaders of change in healthcare.

This is just the beginning of what I hope to share here, not only milestones, but also reflections, challenges, and ideas that matter for our profession and our communities.

أهلاً بكم في أول تدوينة لي. سيكون هذا المكان مساحة لأشارك معكم قصصًا عن الصيدلة والقيادة والصمود وقوة المجتمع. ومن المناسب أن أبدأ من هنا، من لحظة جمعت بين التقدير والتأمل في الرحلة التي أوصلتني إلى هذه النقطة.

في عام 2025، حظيت بشرف نيل جائزتين عزيزتين على قلبي:

• صيدلانية ولاية فيكتوريا لعام 2025 من الجمعية الصيدلانية الأسترالية.

• أفضل صيدلانية مجتمعية في أستراليا لعام 2025 من Patients Australia وبمشاركة نقابة الصيادلة الأسترالية.

  
  

هذه التكريمات تعني الكثير بالنسبة لي، لأنها تعكس ليس فقط الجهد الشخصي، بل رؤية لمهنة الصيدلة تقوم على الخدمة والنزاهة والرعاية الحقيقية.

وصلت إلى أستراليا لاجئة في سن الثالثة عشرة. هربت عائلتي من العراق خلال الحرب، عابرين الجبال سيرًا على الأقدام، نحمل الأمل فقط في الأمان. تلك التجربة منحتني الصمود، وشكلت التزامي بأن أجعل لحياتي معنى في وطن جديد.

من عبور الحدود كطفلة خائفة إلى عبور المنصة لاستلام جائزة وطنية، رحلتي لم تكن عادية أبدًا. لكنها برهان على أن الإيمان والعزم والقلب قادرون على تحويل الألم إلى غاية نبيلة.

بالنسبة لي، الصيدلة دائمًا كانت أكثر من دواء. إنها أن تكون قلب المجتمع, مكانًا يجد فيه المرضى آذانًا صاغية، والعائلات رعاية، والصحة وصولًا ميسرًا. إنها الابتكار والقيادة، وضمان أن تكون الصيدليات مراكز حقيقية للرفاهية.

هذا الإنجاز ليس لي وحدي. بل هو لكل مريض وثق بي، ولكل زميل شاركني المسيرة، ولكل مجتمع احتضن رؤيتي للصيدلة.

وأملي أن نستمر في أن نكون:

• قلب مجتمعاتنا.

• صوت مرضانا.

• وقادة التغيير في الرعاية الصحية.

  
  

هذه مجرد بداية لما أود أن أشاركه هنا, ليس فقط الإنجازات، بل أيضًا التأملات والتحديات والأفكار التي تهم مهنتنا ومجتمعاتنا.
