From refugee to Pharmacist of the Year — a journey of resilience, leadership, and community.

Sara Murdock’s story began in Baghdad, where she grew up during the Iran–Iraq war. At the age of 12, her family was forced to flee, smuggled across mountains in search of safety. They eventually found refuge in Australia, carrying nothing but hope and resilience.

That early experience of displacement shaped Sara’s lifelong mission: to give back through service, to care for others with dignity, and to ensure that healthcare is accessible to all.

Over the past 20 years, Sara has built a career that bridges science, humanity, and community. She has worked across regional NSW, opened and operated multiple pharmacies, and held senior leadership roles in the pharmaceutical industry.

Today, as the Professional Services Pharmacist at Pharmacy 777 Pascoe Vale, Sara leads service delivery, patient care, and community engagement. She has spearheaded initiatives such as:

  • Establishing onsite and offsite vaccination clinics

  • Expanding services in sleep apnoea, integrative health, and lactation support

  • Delivering health education in schools, sporting clubs, and community groups

  • Renovating the pharmacy to include a private consultation room for patient dignity

  • Extending trading hours to improve healthcare access for working families

Her approach combines innovation with compassion, transforming the role of community pharmacy into a true community hub.

Sara’s leadership extends beyond the pharmacy walls. As a dedicated Rotarian and Chair of Community Services, she leads grassroots projects including the STEM Stars Challenge, Community Health Expo, and Healthy Leg Day.

She is also actively involved in charity and fundraising initiatives, from hosting morning teas in support of the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation, to raising funds for My Room Children’s Cancer Charity, to celebrating milestones with her local Men’s Shed.

At a national level, Sara contributes to the Pharmacy 777 Retail Services Owners Working Group, shaping patient-centred care and sustainable pharmacy models across Australia.

Sara’s work has been recognised with state, national, and international honours, including:

  • VIC Pharmacist of the Year 2025 – Pharmaceutical Society of Australia

  • National Outstanding Community Pharmacist 2025 – Patients Australia

  • Finalist, International Pharmacist of the Year 2025

  • Featured in SBS, Australian Pharmacist, Pharmacy Daily, The Australian Journal of Pharmacy and Azzaman

Above all, Sara is a proud single mother of two, Dalia and Jude. They have grown up alongside her community and pharmacy work, often joining her in volunteering and fundraising events. For Sara, motherhood is not separate from her leadership; it fuels her purpose and grounds her in compassion.

Sara believes that healthcare is about more than medicine — it is about humanity. Her vision is for a future where every person is met with dignity, empathy, and equitable access to care.

“Adversity does not define us. How we rise from it does.”

Sara is available for speaking engagements, mentorship, media features, and community collaborations.
